WAWRINKA THROUGH

Roger Federer’s compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka has defeated Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012. Wawrinka won the match by 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Wawrinka who is the second highest ranked Swiss player in the world was given a tough fight by Istomin. Both the players started the match quite steadily and there were no breakthroughs in the first six games of the opening set. Wawrinka managed to sneak a breakthrough in the seventh game and then, made the lead more profound by serving out the next game.  The scorecard was saying 5-3 in the favour of Wawrinka at the end of the eighth game.

Istomin held his service in the ninth game to reduce the lead to 5-4. The Uzbek youngster needed a breakthrough in the 10th game to extend the set, but, he wasn’t able to do so. Wawrinka easily served out the 10th game to seal the first set by 6-4.

In the second set, both the players broke each other’s service once in the first six games and the scores were levelled at 3-3. The next three games went with the serve and Istomin was ahead by 5-4 at the end of the ninth game. Istomin had to break Wawrinka’s service in the 10th game to win the second set and he did exactly that. He won the second set by 6-4 and came back into the match.

Both the players made a good start to the third set and held their service in the first eight games. But, in the ninth game, Wawrinka got a breakpoint and that’s what he needed. He latched on that opportunity to make the score 5-4. He didn’t lose the advantage after that and held his service in the 10th game to win the match.

In the third round, Wawrinka will play against the world no. 1 Roger Federer.
