The no. 1 tennis player in the world, Roger Federer, has defeated Mardy Fish of USA in the quarter final of the Western and Southern Open at Cincinnati. Federer won the match in the straight sets by 6-3, 7-6 (4). With this victory, Federer has moved into the semi final. Fish, who was given the 10th seed in the competition, looked completely off-colour in the first set. However, he showed some resistance in the second set, but, Federer’s versatile game proved to be too much for him. This was the 10th match between these two players and Federer defeated Fish for the 9th time.
Federer was off to very good start in the first set. He broke Fish’s service in the opening game of the first set to take a lead of 1-0. There were no more breakthroughs in the first set till the end of the eighth game and Federer was ahead by 5-3 at the end of the eighth game. Fish had to hold his service in the 9th game to extend the set, but, the American failed in doing so and Federer won the first set by 6-3. In the second set, Fish made it hard for Federer to earn points. Both the players held their entire serves and the set went into the tie breaker. In the tie breaker, Federer got ahead by 4-2 and maintained the lead till the end of the tie breaker to win the second set by 7-6(4).
It took Federer just 87 minutes to knock Fish out of the tournament. In the semi final, Federer will play against his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka. As per Federer, he is happy that the semi final match will be played between the two Swiss players. He is pretty excited about that match and he is looking forward to it.
