Andy Murray has defeated Bernard Tomic of Australia in the second round of the Sony Open. Murray won the match in the straight sets by 6-2, 6-3.

It was a great start of the competition for the Scot. He was not at his peak, but, he did enough to get better of the Australian youngster who looked in horrible form.

This was the second time that Murray was competing against Tomic. Before this, these two players had lock horns with each other in the Brisbane International Tennis tournament last year. That match was won by Murray.

Tomic’s start in the match was not bad. In the first game of the opening set, he smashed a couple of aces and held his serve in style. Murray didn’t look as fluent as Tomic in his first service game, but, somehow, he managed to serve it out and the scores got levelled at 1-1.

Tomic was brilliant in his second service game as well. He was not looking nervous at all till that stage.

In the 4th game, Tomic had three break opportunities, but, Murray showed amazing calmness under pressure and saved all those breakpoints by playing some great shots. With a couple of great backhand volleys at the end, the British superstar held his serve and the score became 2-2.

In the 5th game, Murray got a breakthrough against the run of play. The Australian youngster suddenly lost the momentum in the 5th game. He committed quite a few errors and dropped his serve.

The next three games went with the serve and when the 8th game got finished, Tomic was trailed by 3-5. He could have extended the set with a serve hold in the 9th game. He began well and made it 30-30. But, after that, he committed a couple of unforced errors which gave Murray the chance to seal the set.

In the second set, Murray was unstoppable. He broke his opponent’s serve twice i.e. in the 4th and the 6th game and won the set with ease by 6-1.

Juan Martin Del Potro has been knocked out of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. In the semi final match, De Potro was beaten by the Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic. Djokovic won the match in the straight sets by 6-3, 7-6(4). This was a convincing win for the world no. 1. It took him just 104 minutes to make his way into the finals.

Del Potro was expected to give a tough fight to Djokovic, but, the Argentinean was not at his best on Friday. Talking to the reporters after the match, Djokovic said, “In the second set, there were a few tough moments, but, I handled them well. I kept myself calm throughout the match. Del Potro is a very good player, but, I was backing myself to win the match in the straight sets and I am very happy that I eventually managed to do it.” (more…)
